Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Rainbow P-12 College is one of a cluster of 13 schools in the Wimmera Mallee area that offer students in Year 10, 11 and 12 courses known as VET (Vocational Educational Training). Vocational Educational Training involves nationally accredited courses run by TAFE trainers. These courses are pre-apprenticeship and Certificate credited. Students participate in practical activities and theory over 1 or 2 years. These courses are needed for the Vocational Major certificate of VCE as students need 180 hours of VET to qualify for the VCE Vocational Major certificate at the end of year 12. Some VET courses offer a scored assessment in second year, which means the student sits a VCE examination for the subject and gains a study score towards their ATAR.

VET classes are run every Wednesday of the school term (starting week 3 of Term 1). The bus for Horsham leaves from in front of the Rainbow Pharmacy at approximately 7.20am and delivers students to the Horsham College bus exchange. The courses are run at Federation University (Horsham) or Horsham College (Horsham) or Longerenong College (Dooen). Students have free bus travel to Horsham and in the case of Longerenong students, then onto Longerenong College.

VET courses are comprised of Units of Competency (subjects) designed and accredited nationally. Each unit has a time frame determined by the amount of work required and therefore the 31 weeks of VET is comprehensive. Students are expected to catch up on any missed work from being absent from VET. Most courses run over 2 years, with pre-determined units of competency for each year completed. VET students do not pay for tuition, but are expected to pay for any material costs, such as hairdressing equipment, required footwear and clothing, excursions, paper resources.
